Birchgrove Kitchen

With a broad ranging commission to modernise and transform this Sydney workers cottage, Nobbs Radford Architects (design), Artechne (builder) and Dan Kitchens Australia (joinery) worked in close collaboration to deliver a modern classic. Situated in an old extension at the rear of the cottage, the kitchen space was completely gutted and redesigned. A timber staircase with American Oak wall panelling seamlessly wraps around into the kitchen continuing on to become pantry, storage, wall ovens and cooking niche.
Adjacent to this wall is more American Oak panelling this time concealing integrated refrigerators and more storage. Above is a custom timber vent designed to inconspicuously house both refrigerator and air conditioner ventilation. A concrete island benchtop and plinth were formed onsite with the island cabinetry built under to tight but varied tolerances.

The kitchen, made predominantly of American Oak, seamlessly wraps around into the stairwell. Design: Nobbs Radford Architects.

Birchgrove Kitchen showing the concrete cantilever island

The cantilevered concrete island was formed onsite and is self supporting due to steel framing. The cabinetry cleverly keeps the frames out of sight whilst also negotiating the varied dimensions of the concrete. Design: Nobbs Radford Architects.

Stainless steel cooking niche with hidden storage

The cooking niche is entirely clad in stainless steel and conceals secret splashback shelving behind. A Barrazza cooktop is also seamlessly welded into the benchtop. Design: Nobbs Radford Architects.
